This card represents Gemini the Twins, and is ruled by Mercury. On path 17 between the understanding of Binah 3, and the sunlight of Tiphareth 6 this Thoth trump represents the mercurial aspect of analysis of the Gemini aspect which indicates the Twins, and ultimately the solar aspect of knowing the correct path, or synthesis. VI Lovers is the polar opposite of XIV Art and is represented by the Hebrew letter Zain which indicates a sword or the airy-mercurial construct of your decision.
Appearance:
Under a royal arch of swords; Cupid flies across the orange-red sky while taking aim with his quiver of thelemic arrows. Partially behind him stands a giant mercurial IX Hermit standing in the Sign of the Enterer while holding a scroll of the logos around his arms. This magickal sign is standard in most Theurgic Invokings, and would indicate the invocation of Mercury to send intelligent energy to the aspirant; while Cupid adds Love to equilibrate the situation, making calibration difficult. Behind them in the upper corners of the card are statues of Eve and Lilith, which are a clue to the original design of this trump, dating from before establishment Christianity’s suppressive influence, around the time of the alchemist
Under the enchantment of the God of Mercury’s theurgy, and Cupid’s thelemic arrow, the Golden Crowned Moorish King is holding hands with the Silver Crowned Queen which verifies the enchantment of IX Hermit and that the secret knowledge housed in his lamp, as well as in the orphic egg has been passed-on to the royal couple. The Moor holds the Sacred Lance while our Queen holds the Graal of the Anointed Dove. Both Royal Robes have identical shawls embroidered with the Five Vs; these are a sign of initiation by the masters. The robes themselves are embroidered as well, the King’s with Serpents, and the Queen’s with bees.
At the bottom of the card is the Red-Winged Orphic Egg, and standing on the wings are two children; the one holding carnations also holds the Graal, and the other holding the club, is also holding the Moorish sacred lance. The entire hieroglyph is that of the Hermetic Wedding, Equilibrium, and the Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosenkreutz; i.e. the Great Work.
The red-Winged grey colored Orphic Egg is wrapped in a purple mercurial serpent, and balancing upon a large cross-bow are the alchemic white eagle, and the red lion. Notice the red lion’s tail; it is curling-up and latching the cape of IX Hermit to adjust the balance; the image as a whole is similar to the Egyptian Funerary.
Interpretation:
In a reading it will always indicate a “choice”. The querent knows what they want, but they don’t want to give anything up. This card indicates that the choice is going to bring a “good-bye” to someone, or something. The surrounding cards will reveal the nature of the “choice”, and sometimes even the outcome.
• If combined with XX Aeon it could indicate that your querent knows their choice already.
• If combined with II High Priestess, it could indicate that the choice is in motion already, and that much is out-of-the-querent’s hands as far as choice goes.
• If combined with XXI Universe, or XIX Sol, or XVII Star, and a minor Arcana card; than the minor card should be considered advice.
• The Court cards will indicate who the players involved are, or if the Querent is the self-judgmental type and can’t identify the Court, then the Court will represent the querent him/herself depending on the decision that they make.
VI Lovers will just about always represent a choice. In Hollywood representations it means a romantic encounter, and I guess, depending on the surrounding cards this may be true, but it would be rare, and the other cards would have to define that.
The Mysteries:
There is an exoteric and an esoteric perspective here, both can be summed up in the words “Cerulean Blue”. This state is the result of invocation leading to enchantment, and from an exoteric perspective it may not be the best of places, kind of like lala-land.
From an esoteric perspective, this developmental level is a great one to awaken at. To do this one must exercise constant monitoring of your animal-self’s actions, and learning to instantly recognize these human-actions for what they are. We are all a piece of the whole, recognized in the air of planet Earth as a whole, and know that after the hermetic marriage has taken place this exercise is much easier, infact it’s a normal state of consciousness for the initiate, kind of like looking into the finest Rolex watch and seeing the inner workings.
Crowley wrote that this card was changed during the Church’s Inquisition era, and that it originally stood for creation, in particular Adam Kadmon with Lilith; and after the fall-of-man, Adam and Eve, Eve and the Serpent, and subsequently Cain and Able, blood and the mark of the Beast.
Holding this one out at arm’s-length away next to XIV Art; slightly crossing your eyes, focus on the “center” “created” card, this card will be made up of aspects of both cards and will be very interesting to examine. While doing this slowly vibrate the mantra: “Shu`Tef`net, YodVavHehHe, E`bah, Ho`no`nol, Am`bre`el, Sar`i`el, Ge`el, Te`om`em, Mah`stabbah`gal`gal”. And after this gets tiring, just simply look at the image, relax, and drift off into gnosis with Gemini.
